BBQ Cookoff Team New Member Training

The Problem

This project stemmed from a palpable frustration among cookoff team members. Long-standing team members found themselves shouldering the majority of the workload, as newer members either lacked clarity on their responsibilities or treated the event as a social gathering. Through a needs analysis, it was determined that the newer members were unsure of their roles.

The Solution

A survey given to the team revealed that rookie members were not informed on how they should help. It was determined that a solution should include key tasks that all members should know how to perform. The preferred method for this training was the implementation of a self-paced training module.

My Process

There are several steps to creating a tailored training to the specific needs of a group. Locating whether the need for training is a process or a behavior issue is the first step. A needs analysis helps to determine how training can produce a positive outcome. The SMEs in this project were the senior team members. By surveying established team members, a collection of tasks were identified in order to help new team members understand their responsibilities.

With the direction of the SMEs, I came up with five categories that we could educate the rookie members regarding the procedures of the cook team. While some information referred to handling items before and after the event, other miscellaneous information was group in a category of “things to be aware of”. Roles such as door manager and bartender were also explained in detail.

Visual Mockups

I wanted to keep the design simple but engaging. My first prototype was an effort to just get the text and shapes on the page. Knowing that I had 5 main topics to cover, I decided to rely on icons for the buttons and key elements. I used the colors in the established logo and then mixed in a complimentary gray color.

I was pleased to locate icons that also had a “colored in” option for my visited state. This acts as a reminder of the topics that were already covered. This feature also gives the user a glimpse into how much more content is ahead of them.
